The article I chose for this reaction post is the AIGA guide to internships.
I feel like I should’ve gotten an internship my junior year of college, but at the same time I feel more prepared for a job with the new tools I learned from my fall and spring semester this senior year. One of the key things I learned in college was how to handle a critique. Critiques are tough. Anyway, back to the article.

As an intern, you should:
- Arrive on time and be ready to work as soon as you get there
- Treat everyone in the office politely and respectfully
- Prioritize communication and ask questions if you do not understand something
- Make no demands (don’t be “high maintenance”)
- Show enthusiasm and a willingness to help
I completely agree with this section. I also have some advice for the younger people reading this: even in your classes, you should follow this technique. Your professors will notice this. Another thing I agreed with in this article was the time and money portion. You can earn academic credit or cash for your work with a company as an intern. Credits are nice for students, but if you’re a fresh graduate, cash is the way to go.
I’m graduating from college in less than a week.
I refuse to believe it but at the same time I’m excited. I’m also terrified of what’s ahead. Terrified for what life holds for me, what jobs and internships are ahead, and what the world will hold for me. I already have an associate’s degree to my name, and to have another degree is exciting but at the same time kind of sad. Sad because I’ll miss the four years of college that I’ve experienced.
Here’s some advice for those looking at this just out of high school or community college. You know how they tell you to enjoy college while it lasts? Enjoy it. Seriously. It goes by so quickly.
One of the things I’m not looking forward to is paying taxes. But, after reading some articles online, I feel like I can understand it easier. According to the article “How to Do Your Taxes if You’re a Freelancer” by Aiden Wicker on Lernvest, look for deductions and fill out your forms!

Another huge thing I’m concerned about is finding a job/internship. I’ve never had a job where I go to an office/place of work, but I have plenty of in-house experience. What does that mean? It means that you will have a hard time finding a job. But, if you beef up your online presence and portfolio, people will find you! Also, purchase Adobe Creative Cloud! As much as I hate the monthly fee, it is becoming the accepted software.

This will be a quick post.
What is my proposed idea for the summer? Well besides relaxing for a bit and trying to find work, I will improve my skills in Graphic Design. How will I do this you may ask? I will learn to use InDesign and Illustrator more effectively as programs. I hope this will present a challenge to me but at the same time I’m looking forward to it.
“When Cuba Was Seductive” was the article I chose for this reaction post.
This article was written recently in response to Cuba and the United States recently reopening diplomatic relationships. This article was written about a collection happening now at Florida International University from May 6th to August 21st.

“Ever since Columbus first stepped foot on Cuban soil and called it the “loveliest land that human eyes have ever seen,” visitors have continued to describe and picture Cuba as a paradise. In the first half of the twentieth century, American marketers, mobsters, and developers and Cuban artists, performers, and graphic designers jointly shaped the island’s reputation as a dreamy tropical escape. Publicity campaigns and Hollywood films touted Cuba’s promises of indulgence—rum and cigars, rumba and mambo, and legalized drinking and gambling—all before travel restrictions curbed the two countries’ tourist trade.”

Overall I think this a really cool look into Cuba, a country once hidden behind Communism now coming out into the light with diplomatic relations. I’m excited to see what the future holds!
FIU Description of Show
Anyone who uses Helvetica knows nothing about typefaces. -Wolfgang Weingart (postmodernism)
If you do it right, it will last forever. -Massimo Vignelli (modernism)
I chose these quotes because I feel they both sum up the modernism/post-modernism argument. Massimo Vignelli is considered by many to be the god of modernism due to his simple but efficient designs. Wolfgang Weingart is a respected postmodernist, but his work isn’t as well known/widely used as Vignelli’s is.
Both of the images are varied, the top being Weingart and the bottom being Vignelli. Note the stark differences in the two works. I like both of the works, but I like Vignelli’s slightly more because of how clean, neat, and how aligned everything is.
At first, I didn’t understand much about these two key movements in graphic design. But, when I began looking further into it for this post, it opened up a whole world of interest to me.
According to visualartdepartments, it all began with the abstract movements for modernism. Modernism began to rise with artists such as Pablo Picasso experimenting with cubism and fauvism. Another interesting thing about modernism is how the artists in this movement kept everything clean and on a grid. Modernism was rejected by many, with some calling it narcissistic.
Postmodernism changed all of this, getting rid of the grid and neatness ideology. According to the Emigre essays, postmodernism began to have an impact in the 1980s.
“Postmodernism didn’t have much impact on graphic design until the middle of the 1980s. Initially, many designers thought it was just undisciplined self-indulgence. A hodgepodge of styles, with no unifying ideals or formal vocabularies, dreamed up by students in the new graduate programs. But in fact it was a new way of thinking about design, one that instigated a new way of designing. Designers began to realize that as mediators of culture, they could no longer hide behind the “problems” they were “solving.” One could describe this shift as a younger generation of designers simply indulging their egos and refusing to be transparent (like a crystal goblet). I feel that both systems have had their impact on art, both in a positive and negative light, with both adding their own respective famous works and artists.
The How to get a Job at Google article by Thomas L. Friedman was an interesting article to read. It was interesting because he does a basic summary of what Google looks at when they hire someone new. Laszlo Bock is the man that Google uses to hire new people, and he had five steps to hiring someone new at Google.

2. Emergent Leadership
One of the most interesting quotes in the article in my opinion is the leadership quote.
“Leadership — in particular emergent leadership as opposed to traditional leadership. Traditional leadership is, were you president of the chess club? Were you vice president of sales? How quickly did you get there? We don’t care. What we care about is, when faced with a problem and you’re a member of a team, do you, at the appropriate time, step in and lead. And just as critically, do you step back and stop leading, do you let someone else? Because what’s critical to be an effective leader in this environment is you have to be willing to relinquish power.”
I agree with this because whenever a company looks at your experience, they want to know how you as a capable leader can handle new challenges and if you can step up to the plate and handle the pressure. I also agree with the statement about how you should be able to relinquish power in case if you can’t handle the stress that might come with it.
